Homework will not begin until AFTER Curriculum Night
Research shows that the single most thing homework does for a students is to show the parents what a teacher values. I am not 100% against homework, I'm just a firm believer in children playing and spending time with their families to build social and emotional skills. Children do not need to be sitting inside for an hour doing more school work after 7 hours of hard work in school. Thing the I want you to know I value most is reading. Every night I expect the students to read for at least 20 minutes. You may have to slowly build up to that stamina, but in first grade the expectation is to read for 30 minutes straight by the end of the year. We begin working on our reading stamina day one during Daily 5. Not sure what I mean by 'reading stamina?' Ask your child- they will know!
Here are homework guidelines:
Literacy
Please have your child read 20 minutes every night. Reading each night can be done in many ways: you reading to them, them reading to you, sibling reading or even listening to AudioBooks. The important thing is that you are engaging your child in their reading. You can do this by asking them questions about what they read (refer to the question stems under Literacy Resources) or have them retell. If you need to know the level your child is reading on, do not hesitate to ask me. Please record your child's nightly reading on the yellow card inside his/her reading response journal
In addition to reading 20 minutes every night, reading comprehension homework will be due each Friday. At the beginning of each month, each student will receive a reading response menu to be kept in his or her reading response journal. Each week, he/she should choose at least one activity to complete using a book of his/her choosing has read at home. They are welcome to complete more than one activity if they would like. I will check for completion each Friday and give feedback. Student will bring their journals home every Monday and must return them by Friday.
Each student should write the date & the title of his/her reading activity choice, along with the title of his/her book, across the top of the paper when completing the activity. Please take note: only ONE response is required each week. Your child does NOT have to a response every night.
Spelling
Your child will bring home two things for Letterland homework:
1.A laminated sheet, front to back. One side has daily activities to conduct each night as homework. These activities are the same every week. This sheet will be your reference for the entire school year. I have laminated it so that it will last and also so you can utilize the backside with a dry erase marker (don’t have any? Let me know) to practice spelling. This sheet will be stored in the back pocket of your child’s blue folder that will come to and from school every day
2.A weekly spelling list. Don’t be intimidated when you first look at this. Your child is responsible for only the marked sections. These sections will be: Tricky Words (sight words) for Review, Tricky Words (these are new sight words for the week), Review Words (from previous weeks), Set A words, and New sentences. The grey box tells you the homework for each day which you will find explanations for on the laminated sheet as described above. Please do not forget to sign this section.
●
At first this new homework will take some getting used to. As we move through the year, I feel confident that it will become more routine.
Spelling test will be on day 5. Please refer to the calendar sent home at the beginning of each month
Math
A math homework sheet will be sent home each night. You can choose to send it back each day completed, or return all sheets on Friday. Please only do the circled problems.
Please practice math facts daily (no more than 5 minutes) with flash cards, practice quizzes or online websites. You can also print the folowing sheets out for at home practice. If you place these sheets in a sheet protector and use dry erase marker, it becomes reusable to practice on over and over again! The first file is printable flash cards.
