Happy Tuesday!
I hope everyone had a great, long weekend. We had a wonderful start to our week. I cannot believe how quickly the students are becoming acclimated to classroom routines and procedures. I've been able to start instruction sooner than I've ever been able to because of this! Here's what is happening in our room:
Social Emotional Learning: Students will develop norms this week for how they want yo treat one another. Last week, you received a newsletter and activity about the caring schools curriculum. The newsletter and activity are just to keep you updated on what we're doing and to serve as a conversation starter at home. The activity does not need to be returned to me. This week, the newsletter and activity will come home on Friday
Math: Last week we learned about growth mindset and how our brain is like a muscle. Our brain is capable of stretching and growing through making mistakes and learning from them. Our brain also grows when we challenge ourselves. Can you believe your children were talking about neuron connections!? This week we will begin Topic 2 in our EnVisions curriculum. Topic 2 is all about strategies to add and subtract within 10.
Literacy: In literacy, students are learning routines for reading workshop and how to pick good choice books. This week, we're reading Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Students will be visualizing, retelling and building connections with Alexander.
Social Studies: Students are learning about our new, school-wide behavior system, S.O.A.R. S.O.A.R stands for: Safety, Ownership, Achievement and Respect. These are categories that will help make the school day successful for everyone. This week, we are focusing on safety.
Here are a few answers the the questions I've received this week:
9/11: There will be a sub in the classroom but I will be on campus. Please send any transportation changes to the front office.
9/12: Early Release Day at 12:00- Please send me any transportation changes
9/13: Curriculum Night at 5:30
9/19: Teacher Workday- No School
10/1: Ms. Allen will be out. Mrs. Groudle will sub. Please send any changes or notes to the front office
Lastly, if you would like, come and enjoy lunch with your child! It's always such an excitement for your child to see you during the school day. Here are a few things about coming to eat lunch:
Thank you to all who have donated materials, books, and supplies to our classroom! I cannot thank you ENOUGH!
Have a great week!

Dear Parents,
It was wonderful getting to meet you all yesterday at Open House. I truly believe we're going to have a wonderful school year! I'm looking forward to seeing my new class all together Monday morning and kicking off the 2018-2019 school year. Here are a few housekeeping items for next week:
This summer many of my family or friends volunteered to sponsor a child in our classroom with a book to kick off the school year. In each book, they wrote a note to your child. It's been so much fun receiving these books from Washington state, New Jersey, Virginia, and California. Some came all the way from Switzerland! There are even a handful that came from friends that are in the Army. I'm very excited to give these to your child on Monday.
I hope you enjoy your weekend! Please email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Here are a few answers the the questions I've received this week:
- The communication log is simply a means of communication between home and school. You can use it to send me notes such as transportation changes or early dismissal notices.
- Please send your child with their own snack everyday. In case you forget, I do have back up snacks in the classroom.
9/11: There will be a sub in the classroom but I will be on campus. Please send any transportation changes to the front office.
9/12: Early Release Day at 12:00- Please send me any transportation changes

Lastly, if you would like, come and enjoy lunch with your child! It's always such an excitement for your child to see you during the school day. Here are a few things about coming to eat lunch:
- Please sign-in in the front office
- Meet us outside of the cafeteria at 11:00
- You may sit with us at our table, at one of the empty, middle tables or outside
- Students may bring one friend to sit with them at the middle tables
- If you choose to sit outside, this is great but students cannot bring a friend. We've had a lot of unsupervised activity with students outside with parents during lunch. I don't want you to have to babysit during your time with your child.
Thank you to all who have donated materials, books, and supplies to our classroom! I cannot thank you ENOUGH!
Have a great week!

- Your child will only be bringing home their blue folder until after curriculum night. This folder should come to school every day. In it, I've inserted a contact log so that you can write any notes to me. Take Home Binders will start after curriculum night so that I can explain how they will work.
- On that note, curriculum night is September 13th at 5:30. There will be two information sessions
- If you have not brought in student supplies, you're welcome to keep sending them in next week. In addition to the supply list, I'm also requesting a 1 inch, white, 3-ring binder to serve as your student's take home binder. If you have any questions about supplies, please do not hesitate to ask!
- In the packet of papers you received at Open House, there was a blue health card and a green emergency dismissal form. Please return these as soon as you are able to.
- My website is a great place to start to get familiar with all things first grade. Here is the link: www.jennifer-allen.weebly.com
